Writing Notes

A novel collects material long before it has a shape: a name overheard on the bus, a floor plan for a house that doesn't exist yet, a question about chapter nine that can't be answered until chapter twenty is written. Writing Notes gives that material one home. Its 300 pages are divided into six sections, each opening with a two-page index, so a character's eye color or the source for a date can be found again months later without paging through the whole book.

It holds the loose, unfinished thinking a story is built from, with no prompts or worksheets to work through. Start it with a new project, keep it open beside the draft, or take it back out when you return to a story after time away.
