The Plot Workbook

Most writers can feel when a plot isn't working long before they can say why. The middle goes slack, the ending arrives and nothing seems to have been decided, a scene that should be the heart of the book reads like a summary of itself. The Plot Workbook is about the why. It treats plot as a set of forces you can name, build, and test: the pressure that sets a story moving, the causes that make one event produce the next, the consequences that make events cost something, the escalation that keeps the cost rising, and the change the whole chain produces.

It works at any stage: shaping a new idea, drafting toward an ending, or diagnosing a manuscript that has stalled. One invented novel runs through every section as a worked example, built page by page from a two-clause premise to a chapter map, a set of scenes, and a diagnosis of an earlier draft.

Digital edition: a 181-page PDF with the full-color cover. The index is linked, so you can tap any page or worksheet to jump to it, and every section is bookmarked. The worksheets are fillable, and the file works in GoodNotes, Notability, and other PDF annotation apps.

Printables: the full workbook set up for printing at home (181 pages, with printer-friendly section dividers), and the Worksheets Bundle: all 40 worksheets plus the 4 reference pages, in the order they appear in the book. Both come in US Letter, A4, and A5. Print as many copies of each worksheet as the draft needs.

Core concepts

The five forces of plot (pressure, causality, consequence, escalation, and change) and a working vocabulary used in one sense throughout.

Plot development

From a premise to a story question, with stakes, opposition, momentum, promises and payoffs, subplots, reversals, and the argument a plot makes about the world.

Plot structures

The landmarks every shape shares, what the reader knows and when, the classical models with their sources (three acts, Freytag, the Hero's Journey), and nonlinear, episodic, braided, and kishōtenketsu shapes.

Beats, scenes, and rhythm

Scene and sequel, scene turns, try-fail cycles, pacing, transitions, stillness, genre obligations, and the beat sheet.

Diagnostics

Tracing the faults you can feel (a sagging middle, crowding, drift, plateaus, leaks, arcs that miss each other) back to the forces that cause them.

Tools for plot tuning

Three reusable instruments for the whole book, and a way to plan what each beat should do to the reader.

Also inside

40 worksheets and templates, and four filled reference pages: a working vocabulary, a comparison of structural models, genre rhythms compared, and a table of common plot problems with their likely causes.

Six case studies: Celeste Ng's Everything I Never Told You, Octavia E. Butler's Kindred, Yaa Gyasi's Homegoing, Jesmyn Ward's Salvage the Bones, Sandra Cisneros's The House on Mango Street, and Kamila Shamsie's Home Fire.
